A simple, Shariah-compliant guide to calculating and understanding your Zakat obligation — with transparent, verified giving through Qurban Africa.
Zakat (زكاة) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% of qualifying wealth, made to eligible recipients. It is not a voluntary charity; it is a right of the poor and needy in your wealth, mandated by Allah (SWT).
Zakat purifies your wealth, strengthens the community, and redistributes resources to those in need. It is one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam — simultaneously a financial obligation and a spiritual one.
"And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves — you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:110)
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must own before Zakat becomes obligatory. If your net zakatable wealth equals or exceeds the Nisab, you must pay Zakat.

595 grams of silver
The silver Nisab is typically lower and is often used as the more accessible standard. Scholars differ — consult your Imam.
Note: Nisab values change with gold/silver spot prices. Our calculator uses a guideline value. For a precise current Nisab in your local currency, check with a reputable Islamic finance body or your local Imam. Zakat is calculated on the total value exceeding Nisab — not just the excess.

Zakat Al-Fitr (also called Fitrana) is an obligatory purification payment made at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid Al-Fitr prayer. It is mandatory on every Muslim who has food in excess of their immediate needs — including children, with the head of household paying on behalf of the family.
The amount is typically equivalent to the value of approximately 2.5–3 kg of a staple food (such as dates, wheat, or rice) per person — or its cash equivalent as determined by local scholars. In many regions, this is approximately USD $5–$15 per person (varies by country and year — confirm with your local mosque or scholar).
Fi-Sabilillah (في سبيل الله — In the Way of Allah) is one of the eight eligible categories for Zakat distribution. Scholars have differed on its exact scope, but it broadly includes supporting Islamic causes that benefit the Muslim community and uphold the Deen — including feeding the poor, supporting dawah, and humanitarian relief.
When you fund a Qurbani or donation through Qurban Africa, the meat reaches needy Muslims in Africa who may have no access to fresh meat. This is a direct act of charitable giving in the way of Allah — transparent, verified, and documented.
Scholarly Note: Whether a specific donation qualifies as Zakat under the Fi-Sabilillah category depends on the scholars you follow and the purpose of the funds. If you intend a payment as Zakat (not voluntary Sadaqah), please consult your Imam to confirm it qualifies for your specific madhab and personal situation. Qurban Africa does not issue Zakat certification.
